Autograph Book Poetry

This small exhibit in the museum’s lobby includes over 30 autograph books from the museum’s collections. Autograph books began in the 19th century and reached their peak in the 40’s and 50’s. People, usually junior high and high school students, would write poems to one another inside their autograph books.

This practice was truly one where poetry belonged to the people. Come check out the display of serious, comical, lovely, trite, antiquated and compelling verses in these books. On permanent display.
