Your Child

vonnegutbabies1The stone in the acorn path invited you
To listen, like a child will not. You must
Learn to recognize the need in your child,
Said the stone. Look closely at me, take
A picture if necessary. Notice how still

I am, how separate from the objects
Around me and how that feeling spends
Its time inside me. Draw it out into breakfast
With cereal and laughter and your ears
Open to nothing, nothing, nothing, dammit,
Nothing at all but that child who is the world.
