Ms Holmes Pretends: Novel Poetic

Ms Holmes Pretends

I know this is my poetry museum site, but I really do write prose that is poetic . . . at least much of the time. Ms Holmes Pretends is a novel I have been writing . . . probably all of my adult life–at least in my head. It’s about a career teacher in a public school facing the crisis of her life. In it, I’ve included the “wisdom” of my experience of over 20 years of public school teaching.

The book also includes the comedy in all of those years too, the chaos, the creativity, the injured and disturbed minds, the uniquely trying and wonderful qualities of the modern teenager. I’m sure some of my former students will find themselves somewhere in this book . . . names all changed to protect the innocent, of course. All fiction, of course. The Thing About Chairs

I love simple wooden chairs. I love how they look against a wood floor. On a porch. Stacked up against a wall. Hanging on a wall (I have an old dark-stained one that I use as a towel rack on the bathroom wall.) I think the  artwork at the Oklahoma memorial to the bombing victims, those rows of chairs, is sublime. I wrote a manuscript once about a girl preoccupied with painting landscapes that always had a chair in them. Continue reading “The Thing About Chairs”

Honey Poetry on Blocks

It’s not often a person gets to spend the day sharing poetry with people. So, yesterday, September 1, 2012, was a great day for me. It was the Perkins Honey Mead Poetry Day, a fundraiser for the museum to help me get it complete and officially open. For a $10 donation, visitors got some mead (which I made last year from the honey harvest) and a honey bear from this year’s harvest. . . .plus, the first experience of the 1/3rd complete museum.

Honey! Poetry! Museum Field Guide!

On September 1, we are having a gathering for people wanting to sample the mead I made last year from the honey harvest. I am selling tickets that will get each person (of age!) a glass of mead, a honey bear of just harvested honey (we did it last weekend, Aug. 19), and a snack. The proceeds will go to the Rural Oklahoma Museum of Poetry. Continue reading “Honey! Poetry! Museum Field Guide!”

Tell Me a Story . . . Poetically

Shaun telling a story

I’ve recently been thinking about the place of poetry in storytelling. I belong to a storytelling organization, and we’ve had some discussion about whether poetry should be a part of our storytelling festival. My immediate reaction: Yes, of course, it should. And then I think about it and the main objection—that it would take away from the storytelling focus. And so my reaction is, still, Yes, yes it should be a part of the festival.

Third Exhibit: Cat Poetry

I am currently working on the third exhibit for the museum (finished the Marginalia and Door poetry ones), and this one will be poetry inspired by and about cats. I have modge-podged a few old drawers with some poetry and pictures and I’m figuring out what to do next.  (Don’t all self-respecting museums use modge-podge? Har!)
